We are Five members of Second Semester Students Energy Engineering dept from Hamdard university. We completed this model in May 2011.
This house is more comfortable and good than others simple house. In this model we use solar panel, solar geyser, wind catcher, roof garden and all things which are related with the sun as direct source of energy.
We were appeared in Pro-com energetic 2011 which held in our university and stand at First position between NED, UIT, Sir Syed Universities.
Energy Efficient House
Energy efficient house is such type of a house which consumes lesser energy than other ordinary houses and it uses energy resources which are readily available and are cheap. In energy efficient houses instead of using expensive energy which is coming from burning of fuels we use cheap sources of energy such as solar energy and wind energy by simply installing solar panels and wind turbines. The house is well insulated and colored white in order to keep the heat out. The energy efficient house is environmental friendly too.
Model Features
South and east was of the house are thicker than the rest of the house. Eastern side has windows to have an eastern sun while southern side has no windows. Northern side has big and wide windows to have more indirect light. Though southern side has windows opening to the pool, but they are more shaded and act like verandahs.
The roof of the house is mainly divided into tow parts, flat slab and sloping slab. Flat is for the roof garden (which also work as a natural insulation), and for the wind turbines, while sloping roof is for the solar panels and for solar geysers ,which is at the south side which also helps the solar panels to get the better angle.
Courtyard plays an important role of bringing the light and air in and also ventilate. Apart from that this model house also has wind catchers and those wind catchers have 4 openings, from 2 sides it catches air and from the other 2 side creates a tunnel effect and ventilate the hot air from the room. These wind catchers have nano wind turbines in the walls. Either the air comes or ventilates from the catchers, its pressure will move the turbines and create energy.
Inner side of the house has clear store windows which are opening to the north side for an indirect light and also work as ventilating the hot air.
Also organic garden is grown at the southern side of the house to have more sun and close to kitchen where people can grow their own vegetables using food wastage as natural fertilizers.
Materials Used and Economics:
· 12 Solar Panels of 100 watts = Rs 360000 (Rs 300 per watt)
· 5 small Wind turbines of 400 watts = Rs 250000
· Insulation tiles, white wash of roof, special glass reflecting windows, roof garden, white paint = Rs 140000
Total Costing = Rs 700000
This cost would be recovered in 10 years time. After 10 years it will produce energy free of cost.
Calculations:
Power Calculations:
· Total energy required by a 400 yard house of single family is = 20 KWh
· Amount of sun light and wind available per day is = 8 hours
· Power needed is = 20KWh/8h =2.5 KW
· Keeping in view the transmission and other losses we need a system of power approximately 3.2 KW.
· 12 solar panels of 100 watts = 1.2 KW
· 5 small wind turbines of 400 watts = 2 KW
· Total Power = 3.2 KW
Cost per Unit (KW h) of Energy efficient house:
Cost of solar panels and wind turbines = Rs 610000
KW h used in a Energy Efficient house per day = 20 KWH
Average age of solar panels and wind turbines = 20 years
Cost per unit = Total cost of the system / Kw h produced in 20 years
= 610000 / 20*365*20 = 610000 / 146000
= Rs 4.2 per unit

Solution of Energy Crisis in Pakistan:
Energy Efficient house is the need of the hour in Pakistan Especially in the current scenario where the short fall of electricity in Pakistan is about 5000 megawatts.
Energy crisis can be resolved if we convert our houses to energy efficient house.
Environment Friendly:
The house is absolutely environmental friendly because no smoke or other harmful gases are produces in the power generation.
